Requirements for Land Ownership

In order to claim land, you first had to register at the claims office. In the land run of 1889 the offices were located in Guthrie and Kingfisher, OK. You had to make some kind of dwelling and live on the land for five years. You couldn't leave the land for longer than six months at any one time. If you failed to meet these requirements, the land reverted back to the land office. After five years, you could apply for a patent, which in todays language would be a deed. The President of the United States signed the patent and sent it back to the land office who sent it on to the land owner. Then you were the proud owner of 160 acres.
